Ziggy’s Eyes Saved By Community Support

By Jamie Stillwachs, McDowell County Chapter Manager

Ziggy is a 5-month old kitten who has had it rough since the day he was born. He and his littermates were born outside, and had received none of the care a growing kitten needs. When they were surrendered to our McDowell Chapter, they were emaciated, covered in fleas, and suffering from some of the worst upper respiratory infections we’ve ever seen — including severe damage to Ziggy’s eyes.

As he grew strong and healthy, his eyes constantly battled infection and filled with discharge. They also began to compromise his vision, causing him to run into walls and fall off of everything he tried to jump on. We knew we needed to act fast to get him the help he needed.

Our regular veterinarian referred Ziggy to an ophthalmic specialist. Although such a service is very expensive, we couldn’t let Ziggy lose his eyesight forever without giving him the best fighting chance we could. The specialist at REACH in Asheville knew she could fix his eyes, save most of his eyesight, and remove any pain or discomfort from his future.

The bill estimate was substantial– nearly $2,000 for the corrective surgery. Thanks to the support of our community, however, we were able to make it happen for Ziggy! One incredible person even donated $1,000 towards Ziggy’s care.

He is now recovering in his foster home after surgery, dreaming of the day his eyes will feel great so he can find his forever home. That day is right around the corner, thanks to our supportive donors and community. We couldn’t have helped Ziggy without you.
